Deciding to pursue my Masters degree was a decision that was met with both support and controversy. As a Graphic Designer, already in her field, my coworkers forewarned me multiple times that a Masters degree was not necessary to be successful in my field. My parents were proud of my decision to return to expand on my education. The decision ultimately was my own, as I find myself motivated by the prospect of furthering my education, learning as much as I can, and the career possibilities that can open up for me with a Masters Degree.
Over the next 12 months, as I move forward in my journey towards mastery, I hope to learn as much as I can, challenge myself by creating works that are different styles than what I normally create. I also hope to be able to find a fresh identity for myself as I push forward in my Mastery. I also hope to form new connections with other designers, find friends with similar interests, and discover new ways to motivate myself when I cannot find motivation. With this experience, I hope that I acquire valuable skills that will carry over to more professional environments. I also wish to learn what it means to be a graphic designer in a more professional environment. New techniques and ways of thinking will broaden my capabilities when working with large companies. While pursuing my bachelors degree, I never thought too far into the future and didn’t question where I wanted to work. Now, while I am in my field, I sometimes find myself feeling stifled by the knowledge that I have. While it is enough to work for smaller businesses, there exists a world that I have not had the chance to explore. There are opportunities to grow in my trade, and I would like to stay updated on design software, and trends. I wish to constantly test my limits, and find new ways to improve my design techniques and be able to look at things through new perspectives. The journey will definitely test my limits and I hope to be able to break through the walls I find, and cross the finish line.
